Brighten Up Your Holiday Makeup

One of my favorite products is simple yet satisfying each time I use it. You may be getting all dolled up for your holiday party and one product I would say you shouldn't be without is the Haut Cosmetics Shea Brighteners. Not only are they filled with ingredients that are gentle to your skin just a little bit of them can make a big difference.

No More Dirty Looks gal, Nicolle Mackinnon got her hands on the brighteners and fell in love with the pink for darkness around her eyes. The sweet Stephanie at Rock It Like A Redhead said, "Redheads are known to have very dark circles around the eye and lid area, so it’s wonderful to see a product (the brightener) that actually brightens up this area. Super ‘redhead friendly!’ "
A little background on my skin and makeup: my Foundation shade is Macadamia, Light to Medium with cool undertones, I have hyperpigmentation and cystic acne scarring.

After I've applied my foundation I use my Need A Lift brush to apply the Pink Brightener on my eyelids to give a clean canvas for color. I extend it to the corners and slightly below to counteract darkness. I use The Icing on the Cake brush to apply the White Brightener to the corners of my eyes to create bright eyes! I use the Need A Lift brush again to apply the Yellow Brightener on areas I want to highlight. Some days I only apply this to my brow bone just below my eyebrow but when I want a more finished look I do more highlighting on my nose extending between the brows, cheekbones around my nose, upper lip, chin and jaw line.  I love contouring just a tad with my Illuminating Aloe Cream Tint and Work it Out brush below cheek bones, on perimeter of face a touch on my neck and below lower lip and on the sides of my nose. I blend it all together at the end with Bio-Mineral Foundation and Kabuki Brush!

I don't want to go on too much about highlighting and contouring because there are some real experts that give great explanations and have detailed tutorials on You Tube.
I had a friend watch some You Tube highlight and contouring videos and she felt like it was a lot of makeup and just a little overwhelming. Let me assure you, you can keep it super simple! I do this in 10 minutes time with four kids running around me at 7:00 am! It's a really quick and fresh look in a short amount of time. You can definitely take more time to build on the basics and refine your look with more detail and colors. This video from Faced Makeup Artists may help you out with application techniques.
I added a little Martini Aloe Cream Tint with the Defining Moment Brush to my brows, He's The One Aloe Cream Tint to my cheeks and Ethereal Bio-Cocoa Balm to my lips.

I asked Sherelle a few questions so you can get to know where the person and passion behind White and Elm.
What have been some of your resources for healthy living?
Sherelle: I’m a huge fan of Well + Good NYC, The Chalkboard Mag and MindBodyGreen. They are my go-to resources for healthy nutrition, wellness and fitness. I also have a great amount of respect for the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and their Skin Deep program. They are an incredible resource for detoxifying your life.
Who or what is your inspiration? Do you find your environment (Colorado) to play a factor in your natural living inspiration and in what way?
Sherelle: I am very inspired by nature and I do believe being a native of Colorado contributes to that. The incredible beauty and grounding energy found in Colorado is palpable.   I use that inspiration to keep my life simple and inspired.
Along with your change in beauty products to your natural healthy range, did you change your diet or any household products that you noticed benefitted your overall health?
Sherelle: My journey towards green beauty actually began in my kitchen over 10 years ago when I started detoxifying my diet. Eating organic, plant based foods and juicing opened my eyes to how amazing I could feel. It was like a light switch that had been flipped. I began feverishly detoxify everything else in our home.
Since I am crazy about plants and flowers here, do you have a favorite flower or plant?
Sherelle: My favorite flower is the Colorado Columbine because they grow natively on mountain property that my family owns outside of Denver. When I see one, I remember my Grandmother who has passed, and all the family, love and connection I have to Colorado.

Any enticing tidbits of things to come for White and Elm that you’re willing to share?
Sherelle: White & Elm will be exhibiting at the Indie Beauty Expo NYC in August. We are very excited to join other green beauty brands to celebrate and promote healthier options in the beauty industry. We also have some major new product releases coming out this Fall that our testers are raving about. I can’t wait to share them with our customers!
The growth of White and Elm since you began in 2014 has been significant! Congrats to you and your beautiful line and its future growth. I am so happy to carry your line and see it grow!
Sherelle: Thank you so much!! We are thrilled to have Conscious Makeup Boutique in our family of retailers!

Repsonsible Packaging

Are you just as concerned as I am when receiving online orders with a lot of non-recyclable, plastic packaging? The landfills are overflowing as it is right!?
I've made it my goal at Conscious Makeup Boutique to seek out brands that are eco-friendly in their packaging and keep this continuous when I send out products from my boutique.  I currently carry Haut Cosmetics who just recently switched over a lot of their plastic packaging to glass as well as some unique plant-able packaging.  I also carry White and Elm products which consist of glass packaging. I believe this is a big undertaking for businesses to make, as you know the expense of glass packaging being more expensive to purchase then plastic and heavier in weight to ship.  At the same time the businesses also desire to keep their product prices reasonable and affordable for their clients.
"The message needs to be clear that using reusable containers, recycling packaging materials, avoiding overpackaging, and working hard to not drain our already depleted natural resources will benefit the environment, while keeping product costs from rising. Ultimately, packaging begins with an awareness that must transcend all levels from the manufacturer to the retailers to the consumer with each level responding to the other’s concerns." Reuse your product packaging when you can! In the past I have held onto my sample packaging and used it for travelling or as something I keep on hand in my car or purse.
I tend to lean towards simplistic and minimalistic. Don't let the size of our samples surprise you. Well, I don't want a lot of plastic wasted if I must use it (my goal is to be able to provide glass samples too). The samples may appear small in size but don't underestimate the long-lasting product on the inside.  It will give you an idea of the texture, ingredients, color and if it's a product you'd want to purchase in full size.
Some of the packaging you will see  from Conscious Makeup Boutique:
I decided to use burlap as pouches for samples and other products customers purchase at Conscious Makeup Boutique for many reasons.  I was first attracted to the patterns I found in this jute/hemp made material. Second, burlap is sustainable, biodegradable, 100%  environmentally friendly and recyclable.  Did you know you can even use burlap in your garden?  "Burlap specifically has the lowest carbon and water footprint of all the options" (Read more : http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4600964_what-burlap-made.html)  The burlap patterns and colors I will use will change with the seasons as I believe change is good!

I have chosen some recycled white tissue paper for product protection in boxes and padded mailer envelopes. "NO new materials are used in the manufacturing of the shipping boxes" and are made in the USA. I hope this gives you peace of mind that none of these shipping materials will end up in the landfill.
I believe it's also worth hanging onto packaging that you have received for your own shipping needs when possible. REUSE what you already have. I sure do!
I hope all of these tidbits of information  in our choices of packaging excites the conscious consumer in you!

A Natural Journey

The Natural Journey
All throughout my time spent on social media I have been coming across this amazing thing that inspires me. It is people's personal journeys. Whether it be through change in lifestyle, marriage, parenthood, daily beauty product routines, travel, heartache, addictions, etc. I am completely inspired when it comes to reading or hearing about the journey someone has been on. It's the story of life right? This MUST be where part of my interest in watching such programs as "Intervention", "Teen Mom" or "Millionaire Matchmaker" comes from. Sometimes these are in the background when I am working on social media. I like to see significant change in people, I am always hopeful for the people who decide to or in some cases are forced to change.
Lately I have been following the paths of those who have changed their lifestyle to healthier living and this is also what planted the seed of Conscious Makeup Boutique. It can begin with changing something as simple as more eco-friendly, less toxic laundry detergent and cleaning products in our homes.
A sweet friend of mine whom I met in an adventurous time in my life in Hawaii was so kind to answer some of my questions and to share with us her journey to a healthier and more conscious way of living life.

Meet Teresa
Occupation: Stay at home Mom
Age: 36
From: Saskatchewan, Canada
What caused you to have more awareness of the products you put on your body and the food/drink you consume?
I am a stay-at-home to two fun-loving boys, ages 3 and 1.  Some of my passions including cooking healthy food for my family, baking (mostly healthy) desserts, and having people into my home to share in food and laughter.  I love the smell of vanilla and one thing I like about myself is my willingness to be hospitable.
I grew up on a conventional grain farm in the southern part of Saskatchewan.  My mom stayed at home to raise us and always served home cooked food.  Sure, we had deli meat in our sandwiches at times, and my mom let my sister have Fruit Loops on occasion, but we never had Pizza Pops or store-bought cookies or things of that nature.  In fact, store-bought cookies had such a mysterious, curious appeal to me that I would actually trade my homemade ones for them with classmates who had the same feelings towards homemade cookies.
Time went on and I moved from home to attend university.  Following in my mom's footsteps, I cooked most things from scratch.  I studied at the University of Saskatchewan and received a degree in Crop Science Degree from the College of Agriculture in 2001.  I studied much about conventional agricultural practices, touched on confined animal feeding operations, and even took a course about biotechnology in agriculture.  There wasn't much discussion on organic farming or grass fed-only livestock production at that time.  Admittedly, I didn't have an interest in such things at that point personally but there still should have been some discussion on it.
Fast forward a few years and I got married to a man who had grown up attending many meetings on proper nutrition and the healing benefits that can bring.  He could attest to the healing nature of high-quality nutrition as it saved his life as a young boy when there was medically no hope left for him.  Through his influence, my own curiosity, and a degenerative illness in my father, I started doing my own research into food and began to realize the importance of how the quality of food that we put into our bodies not only affects us, but downstream into our future generations' health.  I was also learning how specific foods, spices, herbs etc. can promote healing of, and prevent, different ailments and the like.  Also, as a person of faith, how could I conscientiously choose food, specifically meat, that was produced with little thought as to the welfare of the animal.  After all, I believe we are to be good stewards of this earth and all in it.

Once someone starts on this path of learning and conviction and making careful choices, it can get overwhelming as everything can seem dangerous and worrisome!  So, instead of being like a deer caught in a pair of headlights, I decided to be systematic with the choices I would make regarding food, household products, personal hygiene products, make-up etc.
First of all, we cannot avoid all hazards in life nor can we have absolutely everything around us 'clean and ethical'.  It's impossible.  Secondly, we are all going to die at one point and there is nothing we can do to change that, no matter how carefully we live our lives.  So, once those two things are realized, it helps put the decision-making into perspective.  We can make choices to that will likely help us live the time on this earth with greater health and a clearer conscience.
What particular area of your lifestyle did you decide to change first?
Did you influence the people around you? How?

What I chose to do personally was to look at the foods we consumed on a regular basis, as well the household and personal hygiene products we used on a regular basis, and started making changes there.  For example, I felt that if something was going into my body everyday, then I must find the highest quality source of that particular item as to bring a benefit, and not a detriment, to my body.  I have since found excellent sources of meat and eggs, make my own cleaning products and laundry detergent, and have found make-up produced with safe and ethical ingredients.
Overall, we experience good health as a family.  If we do come down with something, I am better informed as to what to use naturally to start feeling better quickly.  A sense of empowerment comes with knowing that there is so much we can do for our well-being on our own and that we can control many aspects of our health ourselves.
What are some of your resources for healthy living? (Products, websites, books)
I really like the website Earth Clinic.  It's full of helpful, alternative remedies and people give their feedback as to whether or not a particular remedy worked for them, any side effects they had etc.  There is one contributor, specifically, who does amazing work - Ted from Thailand.  It's worth looking up the remedies he posts and the thoughts behind them.
Haut Cosmetics, for sure!  Your sister's makeup is great and I love her passion behind it and the quality ingredients she uses.

Another useful place to order certain supplements is Swanson Vitamins.
I do read Dr. Mercola's stuff but take some of it with a grain of salt.

Sunrider played an important part in my husband's health years back, before it switched it's focus to multi-level marketing.  They still offer great, quality products but it's not something we sell or anything.
I use Light Mountain henna to color the few gray hairs I have but that isn't for the faint of heart.  People need to review the reviews on Amazon.com before taking on that product.  I've had great success but for those who are in love with the salon experience, they may not embrace it.
Oh, and any menstrual cups like Diva Cup or similar.  I have a similar one and it's the best thing ever!
And if women are expecting babies, the Bradley Method is a great prenatal class to attend.  As with anything, take some things with a grain of salt, but for people who want to make choices for themselves and be freer with the whole labor and birthing process, it's a fantastic class.
Sea-90 Salt  is another recommendation. We bought some and use it in our home for cooking for the most part.
I have the book 'Nourishing Traditions'.  What a great resource for traditional ways of eating.  I've read through it and made some of the recipes in it.
Thank you Teresa for sharing your journey on Conscious Makeup Boutique's Blog and your story to a cleaner, healthier, more conscious living! You are inspiration!

I'm so Thankful for my family and friends all year round but I sure look forward to Thanksgiving Day festivities!
This year our family spent the Holiday with new friends and people we'd never met but the warmth of the welcome into their home made us feel warm and fuzzy and like we'd known them for more than just a few hours. They created lasting memories with my children as they carried out their Thanksgiving Family tradition of decorating a Christmas tree. I'd never seen so many decorations on one tree but it sure glowed with LOTS of LOVE!
